First Lt. Martin Schafer, a platoon leader with Company A, 1st Battalion, 149th Infantry Regiment, leads a patrol through the Al Furat section of Baghdad. When the unit first started patroling through the area they said they came under small arms fire nearly everyday. As they increased their patrols and built relationships with those in the area, the Soldiers said those attacks have largely fallen off.
